Access for People Over 23 Years Old

Applicants over the age of 23 who demonstrate that they are in the legal conditions to attend higher education will take a test under the terms of Decree-Law No. 64/2006, of March 21, as amended by Decree-Law No. 63/2016, of September 13, and ISTEC’s regulation for those over the age of 23, and will apply with their grade converted to a numerical scale of 0 (zero) to 200 (two hundred) points.

Candidates who have reached the age of 23 by December 31st of the year before the exams and have any educational qualifications.

Evaluation Components in the Application Process

  • First part – Listening by the candidate to a lesson given by a professor in the scientific area of the desired course with a duration of 30 minutes;
  • Second part – Written presentation by the candidate of a succinct exposition of the same lesson, having 1 hour to prepare it.

Vocational Pathway Graduates

12th Year + Specific Entrance Test

The special competition for students from vocational courses was created by Decree-Law no. 11/2020, of April 2.

It is a special competition for students holding double certification secondary education courses and specialized artistic courses.

This new form of access was created in order to eliminate the inequality that exists between students who complete secondary education in scientific-humanistic tracks and in vocational tracks.

Change of Institution/Course Pair and Re-Entry

The change of Pair Institution/Course is the act by which a candidate enrolls in a different Pair Institution/Course from the one(s) in which, in previous academic years, he/she enrolled, and it can take place with or without interruption of enrollment and registration in a higher education institution.

Re-entry is the act by which a student, after interrupting his studies at ISTEC Lisbon, enrolls in the same Higher Education Institution and enrolls in the same course or in a course that has succeeded him, provided that these are still in operation.

International Students

All students are eligible to apply to the degrees, through a special competition for international students, if

– Do not have Portuguese nationality or nationality of one of the other member states of the European Union;
– Are not family members of Portuguese nationals or nationals of a member state of the European Union;
– Have not resided legally in Portugal for more than two years, continuously, on January 1st of the year in which they wish to enter higher education, as well as their children who are legally residing with them;
– On January 1st of the year they wish to enter higher education, they are not beneficiaries of an equal rights and duties status granted under an international treaty between the Portuguese State and the State of which they are nationals.

External Students

Isolated Curricular Units

Considering the entry into force of new legislation, namely the amendment imposed by Decree-Law no. 65/2018, of 16th August, it was established the possibility of enrolment in isolated subjects, by any interested party, with the guarantee, in case of approval, of certification and also of creditation, if and when entering a course that includes them.

Enrollment in the assessment regime, regardless of approval, is subject to a maximum number of 60 credits accumulated along the student’s academic path.

The crediting occurs only at the moment when the student acquires, through matriculation and registration, the status of student of the higher education study cycle in question.
